Welcome to Ozflicks: An Australian Film Guide

2017 Note: This is not the Ozflix streaming website. That is at https://www.ozflix.tv/ and/or https://www.ozflix.org/.

This is a blog about Australian (Oz for short) films by an Australian film lover. I hope to interest people in the many fine Oz films that have been made over the years. I only intend to look at films about Australians and Australia, ones that tell stories about Australians, rather than films about other countries made by Australians of which there are also many fine films (see here for more on this).

I love Australian films! Not every Australian film obviously, but I love the fact that there are Australian films at all, with Australian actors and actresses, telling Australian stories about places and people and things we down under know.

It’s been 50 years since I saw my first Australian film (They’re A Weird Mob 1966) at the age of 10 in a local country cinema. In those days virtually all films shown in Australia were from Hollywood or the UK. Australian films, though more common until the 1940s, were rarely made in the 1950s and 1960s and even more rarely seen at the cinema. Those very few that were made were either low-budget affairs which failed at, or did not reach, the box office or projects dominated by foreign stars, directors and stories.

Only in the 1970s did the Australian industry start to revive, at first with crowd-pleasing screwball sex comedies and low-budget horror/action flicks, and then following the landmark Picnic at Hanging Rock in 1975, with a great variety of films telling all sorts of Australian stories from historical dramas, to comedies, to action films, to contemporary dramas and social issue films. Suddenly there was an explosion of energy and talent which has continued in varying degrees until today. Over this time, many fine Australian (and New Zealand) actors, directors, writers and cinematographers have flourished both here and overseas (see my forthcoming lists of successful Oz actors, actresses and directors).

This website will try to provide information on some of the best Australian films I have seen. Please see my ranked list of 300 Australian films, the Ozflicks Guide to the Top 50 Australian Films and my definition of what constitutes an Australian film for Ozflicks. In future I will provide more information about some of these films, plus information on common genres of Australian cinema.

Thanks Vinnieh. It’s a slow build, not very bloggy at all really but maybe one day. I’ve been reading some of your reviews, mainly the Woody Allen ones so far, but they’re very good. I would comment, but it seems too late. I’ll try to be more current. Cheers
