300 Australian Films – Ranked 1-300

A year has passed since I started this site with nothing but an idle notion and a ranked list of the 250 Australian films I’d seen. Now, a year on, I’ve seen another 50 Oz films, and rewatched over 100 of the old ones, and it’s time for a new list. It’s rewarding but sometimes disturbing to rewatch films years or even decades after the film first made a good, bad or average impression on you. Some were better than I remember, others a bit disappointing. (Of course, the Older You (wiser but grumpier) is a somewhat different person from the Younger You (fresher and sharper), so it’s not surprising that our reactions change as you see things through changed eyes.)  So I found the need to reorder my list somewhat – not drastically, but move some films up, and others down. My top 10 is still the same, but there’s been some flux lower down! Plus there are 50 new Oz films squeezed into the list, dating from 1927 to 2017!

So here is my reconsideration of the Australia’s films I’ve seen so far. Your comments would be appreciated, of course. I’ve come to appreciate that everyone loves a different set of Oz films. In a recent ABC Facebook poll (before David Stratton’s Stories Of Australian Cinema went to air on the ABC in June 2017), readers suggested over 150 different films as their favourite Oz film! What diversity!

As noted elsewhere, my list only includes films that tell Australian stories (see here) and is light on horror flicks which aren’t really my cuppa (see here). I’ve also updated my Top 50 Oz Films and Top 100 to reflect the new order and new fi include some new films.

  • The ratings and rankings above are based solely on my enjoyment, after having watched these 300 Australian films.
  • The lists above and below only include films that meet the Ozflicks Definition of an Australian film (see HERE) and exclude other Australian-made films set overseas and not about Australians.
  • This list has links to information about the film on the IMDB database.
  • The number in brackets is the current IMDB rating.
  • The # symbol indicates the film was chosen as one of the ‘100 Greatest Films of Australian Cinema ‘ in Scott Hocking’s 2006 book of the same name.
  • The * symbol indicates the film won an AFI or AACTA award for best film or best director. ** indicates that the film won both awards.
  • The + symbol indicates the film was nominated for an AFI or AACTA award for best film.
  • The > symbol indicates the film was listed in top 100 Australian films at the box office.
  • There is another list of 58 unranked films below recommended by others.

Other recommended Australian Films not ranked in the Ozflicks List above.

The following Australian films have been chosen by others as worth seeing, but I have not seen them yet for a variety of reasons (overseas when they came out, or lack of time, motivation or opportunity). You may wish to see some of these. They fall into the following categories:

  1. Films winning an AFI or AACTA award for best film or best director – marked with *
  2. Films nominated for an AFI or AACTA award for best film – marked with +

What an amazing list! I’m just so surprised The Last Wave is so low down – and Mad Max! Congrats on great work!

Thanks Elaine. It’s a long time since I’ve seen both those films, and I really should watch them again. The Last Wave was a good film (I like all of the top 200 on the list at least) but Weir’s other films sort of crowded it out of my consciousness somewhat. As for Mad Max, it’s a classic, but action films are not my favourite. That said – it is in the Top 100 as is Mad Max 2 (my favourite and the one I saw first, at the cinema) and Fury Road. It is difficult and foolhardy enterprise, ordering films like this, but I just wanted to give it a crack. I like your blog too BTW, you really know your films – it’s a lot wittier than mine, damn it! Cheers

Ooh it whiles away the wee small hours this movie blogging, doesn’t it …! Some of mine is just snark after particularly unenjoyable viewing experiences! I couldn’t believe it last night when I was notified of my 4 year anniversary – it seems like a few weeks since the last one! There’s a lot on your list I have to see for the first time or revisit. So many films, so little time… Aussie TV is so good too! The small screen adaptation of Puberty Blues was on here just a matter of months ago and I thought it was superb, as was The Slap which I watched again recently. Weir has never made enough movies for my liking! And George M,well, he’s getting better and better!

The Slap was a great series. I didn’t catch Puberty Blues unfortunately – but I’ll look out for it. I really liked the first series of The Code as well. And of course Rake!!
I think Peter Weir must have retired – he did slow down after he left Oz, but still made some classics (though I must admit I’ve not seen Master and Commander). He was our best director, so far anyway. Dr George hasn’t been prolific but he keeps on making winners. – an odd mix of cartoon blockbusters and dystopian action. He’s great too.
