600 Australian Films – Ranked 1-600

It’s now August 2022, and I have updated this list with films watched (and rewatched) in the five years or so. This list was originally ‘300 Australian Films’, but I have since added about 300 new Oz films.

As usual I have reordered the list somewhat as a result of rewatching some older films. It’s rewarding but sometimes disturbing to rewatch films years or even decades after the film first made a good, bad or average impression on you. Some were better than I remember, others a bit disappointing. (Of course, the Older You (wiser but grumpier) is a somewhat different person from the Younger You (fresher and sharper), so it’s not surprising that our reactions change as you see things through changed eyes.)

So here is my reconsideration of the Australia’s films I’ve seen so far. Your comments would be appreciated, of course. I’ve come to appreciate that everyone loves a different set of Oz films. In a 2017 ABC Facebook poll (before David Stratton’s Stories Of Australian Cinema went to air on the ABC in June 2017), readers suggested over 150 different films as their favourite Oz film! What diversity!

As noted elsewhere, my list only includes films that tell Australian stories (see here) and is light on horror flicks which aren’t really my cuppa (see here).

Notes on the list above:

  • The ratings and rankings above are based solely on my enjoyment, after having watched these 600 Australian films.
  • The lists above and below only include films that meet the Ozflicks Definition of an Australian film (see HERE) and exclude other Australian-made films set overseas and not about Australians.

Australian films that are not about Australia or Australians

These films have been recognised as Australian productions by AACTA, with Australian writer/directors, but are not about Australia or Australians (See here), so were not included in the list above.

5 Stars

The Piano (1993) (Jane Campion) (Set in NZ) (Made by NZ/Australian director Jane Campion (who grew up in NZ but has lived in Australia for enough years to also count as an Aussie director) with Oz finance, but about British and New Zealand characters in New Zealand. This is a NZ story through and through, much as I’d love to claim it for Australia.)

3 ½ Stars

Dark City (1998) (Alex Proyas) (Set in sci-fi version of US)

Moulin Rouge! (2001) (Baz Luhrmann) (Set in France)

The Great Gatsby (2013) (Baz Luhrmann) (Set in the US)

Predestination (2014) (The Spierig Brothers) (Set in the US)

I Am Mother (2019) (Grant Sputore) (Set at unknown place in the future with American accents)

2½ Stars

The Pirate Movie (1982) (Ken Annakin) (5.3/3,859) (Set in a fictional country and about mainly British pirates and US teenagers)

Also these films, which have not been seen or rated:

  • Black Robe (1991) (Made by Australian director Bruce Beresford with some Oz finance, but about Canadian characters in Canada)
  • The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey (1988) (Made with Australian finance by NZ director Vincent Ward, but about European characters in Europe and NZ)
  • The Old Man Who Read Love Stories (2001) (Made by Australian director Rolf de Heer about American character in Latin America)
  • Lore (2012) (Made by Australian director Cate Shortland with some Oz finance, but about German characters in Germany)
  • The Railway Man (2013) (Made by Australian director Jonathan Teplitzky, but about mainly British characters in England and Thailand)
  • The Rocket (2013) Australian Kim Mordaunt wrote and directed this film about a young Lao boy trying to prove himself in a war-torn country. The film was made in Laos and Thailand with local actors.
  • Tanna (2015) Australian directors Martin Butler and Bentley Dean wrote and directed this story of two Vanuatan teenagers who try to go against their traditional arranged marriage customs. The film was made in Vauatu with all Vanuatan actors.
  • Boy Erased (2018) Australian Joel Edgerton directed, and wrote the screenplay for, this Australian-US co-production about an American pastor with a gay son. The movie was filmed in Georgia (USA) and is an American story.
  • Gringo (2018) Australian Nash Edgerton directed this American action story of Americans solving a kidnap in Mexico. This film was made in the US and Mexico with mainly US actors.
  • The King (2019) Director David Michod and fellow Australian Joel Edgerton adapted Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Parts 1 & 2 and Henry V, for Warner Bros. Pictures. The film was an Australian-US co-production and filmed in Europe with a mix of Australian, American, British and French actors.
  • Animals (2019) Australian director Sophie Hyde directed this story by an English writer about two single women sharing a flat in Dublin. The film was made in Ireland with English, Irish and American actors and characters.
  • Hacksaw Ridge (2016) A US-Australian co-production, directed by an American who lived for about 15 years in Australia, Mel Gibson. The film, about a US pacifist who served as a medic in the Pacific during World War Two, was filmed entirely in Australia, but the story, writers and most of the principal actors were American.
  • Jungle (2017) Australian director Greg McLean filmed most of this film in Queensland, but the film is about an Israeli in Brazil.
  • Gods of Egypt (2017) Australian Alex Proyas directed this fantasy action film, making it in Sydney with a mix of Australian and foreign actors. But the film was an American production, with US writers, and the story concerned Ancient Egypt.
  • Hotel Mumbai (2018) (Anthony Maras) This story of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack is an Australian-American-Indian co-production. Written by an Australian-based Scottish screenwriter, directed by an Australian, the film was made mainly in Australia, as well as India.  But it’s an Indian story.
  • Winchester (2018) The Australian Spierig brothers were hired to direct this historical drama about the widow of the Winchester gun manufacturer. Helen Mirren played the lead role, with Australians Jason Clarke, Sarah Snook, and others in support. The film was filmed mainly in Melbourne, as well as the US, but set in the US.
  • Buoyancy (2019) Australian director Rodd Rathjen wrote and directed this story about a young Cambodian boy who ends up as a slave on a Thai fishing boat.  Though the film was financed by Australians it’s a story about Southeast Asia and Southeast Asians (spoken in Thai and Khymer).

What an amazing list! I’m just so surprised The Last Wave is so low down – and Mad Max! Congrats on great work!

Thanks Elaine. It’s a long time since I’ve seen both those films, and I really should watch them again. The Last Wave was a good film (I like all of the top 200 on the list at least) but Weir’s other films sort of crowded it out of my consciousness somewhat. As for Mad Max, it’s a classic, but action films are not my favourite. That said – it is in the Top 100 as is Mad Max 2 (my favourite and the one I saw first, at the cinema) and Fury Road. It is difficult and foolhardy enterprise, ordering films like this, but I just wanted to give it a crack. I like your blog too BTW, you really know your films – it’s a lot wittier than mine, damn it! Cheers

Ooh it whiles away the wee small hours this movie blogging, doesn’t it …! Some of mine is just snark after particularly unenjoyable viewing experiences! I couldn’t believe it last night when I was notified of my 4 year anniversary – it seems like a few weeks since the last one! There’s a lot on your list I have to see for the first time or revisit. So many films, so little time… Aussie TV is so good too! The small screen adaptation of Puberty Blues was on here just a matter of months ago and I thought it was superb, as was The Slap which I watched again recently. Weir has never made enough movies for my liking! And George M,well, he’s getting better and better!

The Slap was a great series. I didn’t catch Puberty Blues unfortunately – but I’ll look out for it. I really liked the first series of The Code as well. And of course Rake!!
I think Peter Weir must have retired – he did slow down after he left Oz, but still made some classics (though I must admit I’ve not seen Master and Commander). He was our best director, so far anyway. Dr George hasn’t been prolific but he keeps on making winners. – an odd mix of cartoon blockbusters and dystopian action. He’s great too.

  2. Hi there, what a great list. You’ve done a great job. I was just thinking about movies to (re)watch over the holidays. Going through your list will take quite a while. 🙂 I couldn’t see Brand Nue Day? Did I miss it by accident? It’s definitely one of my favourite feel good Australian films.

Thanks Tracy. Everyone likes different films, but these are mine. Bran Nue Day is there at #88. If you look at my top 100 page you can see why I like it and other reviews as well. Nice to ‘meet’ a fellow coffee-lover!! Cheers Peter

Picnic was my favourite for 30 years, but Look Both Ways moved me so much. But I love all my top 100, and like most of the next hundred in some way or other. And I know other people like some of the films I put near the end. Bran Nue Day was a lot of fun, wasn’t it!

Thanks (are you Athena?). Everyone has different tastes – I prefer ‘small’ films as a rule, rather than epics or action. But there are a lot of little-seen gems in there.

  4. Yes that’s me 🙂 I prefer the smaller indie flicks too rather than big budget ones. I always loved the film Lantana that’s probably one of my favourites. Particularly the soundtrack by Paul Kelly was very haunting and bluesy and almost hypnotic. I haven’t been able to find it anywhere though. I liked Romper Stomper a lot because it was so intense. Also Bad Boy Bubby for the same reason – so intense.
